2016-2017 By Youth For Youth Committee Volunteer Position Details


  • High school students across Dane County



  • Participate in a youth-led committee that directs over $30,000 to youth projects and initiatives
  • Represent the youth of Dane County to identify youths’ needs and priorities
  • Produce and publicize a Request For Proposal, review proposals, and recommend funding for youth projects
  • Participate in an identified community service project


  • Be a voice for youth in your community
  • Build and enhance leadership and collaboration skills
  • Develop facilitation, note-taking, and decision making skills
  • Distribute BYFY dollars to meet identified needs of youth in the Dane County community
  • Connect with a diverse group of high school students across the county


  • 6 month commitment from mid-October to mid-April (off over winter break)
  • Weekly Monday evening meetings 6pm-8pm, with dinner starting at 5:45pm
  • Meetings held at either 2059 Atwood Ave (United Way of Dane County) or 119 E. Olin Ave. (Water Utility Building)
  • Transportation assistance available

By Youth For Youth is a collaborative project sponsored by United Way of Dane County, Dane County UW-Extension, Dane County Youth Commission, and the City of Madison Community Development Division.

Youth-Serving Initiatives Can Apply for BYFY Funding

By Youth For Youth (BYFY) encourages Dane County student and youth-led initiatives to submit proposals for the BYFY funding. Youth/youth groups can apply for up to $3,000 for a one year period.

Each year, the BYFY committee sets funding priorities to meet the needs of youth in Dane County. This year the committee is focused on activities that addressed racial equality, educational achievement gaps, LGBTQ+ support & awareness, opportunities for economically disadvantage youth, raise cultural awareness and healthy lifestyle: supporting positive mental, sexual and physical health.

By Youth For Youth’s 2015 Funding Priorities

  • Education:
    • Achievement Gap:Projects that work with the school to prison pipeline, dealing with overrepresentation in Individualized Education Plans, low graduation rate, suspensions/expulsions, and underrepresentation in advanced classes.
  • Racial Equality:Projects that work to alleviate racial disparities in the lives of youth.
  • Raise Cultural Awareness:Projects that encourage increased cultural immersion and understanding/knowledge of various cultures.
  • Healthy Lifestyle:Projects that educate, support, and bring an awareness of positive mental, sexual and physical health.
  • LGBTQ+ Support & Awareness:Projects that educate, support and bring awareness of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Youth:Projects that create leadership, teamwork and youth career opportunities.
