Preventing Falls

  • Preventing FallsExternal elements that cause falls:
    • Ice, snow, clutter, uneven surfaces
  • Internal factor that cause falls:
    • Dizziness, weakness, medications, or poor vision
  • Ways to assess the environment:
    • Keep walkways clear and free of debris
    • Remove or secure throw rugs
    • Use non-slip mats in the bathroom
    • Install grab bars in places they may be needed
    • Keep your home/area well lit
    • Have handrails on both sides of the stairs
    • Wipe up spills immediately
    • Install ramps so the care receiver doesn’t have to use the stairs
    • Keep frequently used items at a comfortable height
    • Make sure shoes fit properly
  • Ways to asses physical condition:
    • Understand whether or not the care receiver has any medical condition that may place them at risk for falls.
    • Know if the care receiver takes medicine that may put them at risk for falls.
  • Reminders
    • Keep your care receiver as active as possible.
    • Maintain an uncluttered environment.
    • Remind your care receiver to change positions slowly.
    • Use assistive devices appropriately and make sure they are fitted appropriately.
    • Remind the person to keep his/her feet apart while walking to prevent tripping on their own feet.
